Quick answer

To reach Valparai, fly to Coimbatore (about 110–120 km, 3.5 hours by road) or Kochi (about 170 km via Athirappilly), take a train to Pollachi Junction (64 km, 2 hours) or Coimbatore Junction (105 km), then drive up the Aliyar ghat with 40 hairpin bends. From Kerala, the road via Chalakudy, Athirappilly and Malakkappara is open only in daylight hours.

By air

  • Coimbatore International Airport (CJB): the most convenient. About 110–120 km, 3.5 hours via Pollachi. See Coimbatore airport to Valparai taxi.
  • Cochin International Airport (COK): about 170 km via Athirappilly and the forest road (5–6 hours, daylight only). Good if you want Athirappilly falls on the way.

By train

  • Pollachi Junction — the closest station, 64 km. Trains connect to Coimbatore, Palakkad, Dindigul and some long-distance routes.
  • Coimbatore Junction — major station with overnight trains from Chennai, Bengaluru and beyond; 105 km to Valparai.
  • Chalakudy (Kerala) — about 105 km via Athirappilly; useful for Kerala travellers.

By road

From Pollachi: 64 km via Aliyar Dam, Monkey Falls and 40 numbered hairpin bends. Open round the clock, but we recommend daylight driving. See the hairpin bends guide.

From Chalakudy/Athirappilly: about 105 km from Chalakudy through Athirappilly, Vazhachal and Malakkappara. The forest stretch is open only during checkpost hours in daylight and can close after heavy rain. See the Athirappilly route guide.

By bus

Tamil Nadu government buses run frequently from Pollachi and regularly from Coimbatore, Tiruppur and other towns. Kerala's KSRTC runs buses from Chalakudy through the forest road. Buses are cheap but slow, and you will need a local cab for sightseeing — see our local sightseeing cab.
