Quick answer

This Valparai river trip strings together the plateau's water: Koolangal river's shallow, pebbled stream through the tea estates (a family favourite for paddling when levels are low), Chinnakallar Falls in one of the wettest corners of the Anamalais, and the Puthuthottam rainforest patch, where lion-tailed macaques are often seen from the road. It runs as a half or full day from your Valparai stay.

    • About 50–60 km of local driving
    • Your stay
    • —

Start mid-morning at Koolangal river, where the stream runs clear over pebbles through the estates. Paddle only when the water is low and calm, and keep children within reach. Drive past the Puthuthottam rainforest fragment and pause where lion-tailed macaques are often seen in the canopy (watch from the road, and no feeding). After lunch, head to Chinnakallar, where a short, rocky path leads to cascades that are fullest from July to November. If the authorities have it open, finish at the quiet reservoir of Lower Neerar.

  • Macaques are wild animals: no feeding, no plastic bags in hand and no chasing them for photos.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Can't find yours? Ask us on WhatsApp — a real person replies.

Is Koolangal river safe for children?

When the water is low (usually October to May) it is shallow and calm near the usual spot. After heavy rain it rises fast, and then we stay on the bank.

When is Chinnakallar Falls best?

From July to November, when the monsoon has filled the streams. In summer the flow is much lighter.

Where can we see lion-tailed macaques?

They are often seen in the Puthuthottam rainforest patch near Valparai town. Watch from the roadside and never feed them; see responsible tourism.

Can we combine this with Nallamudi?

Yes. Do Nallamudi at sunrise and this trip after breakfast; see the Nallamudi sightseeing package.
