    • Dinner

An early pickup (about 4:45 AM from Coimbatore, 5:45 AM from Pollachi) gets you to Topslip for the first hours of light. What you can do depends on what the forest department allows that day: the reception area, the roadsides and any guided walk or safari that is running. Forest birds such as the Malabar trogon, Sri Lanka frogmouth, hornbills and woodpeckers are possible. After lunch, drive to Valparai via Aliyar and the ghat.

  2. Tall trees in an evergreen forestDay 2

Valparai: rainforest fragments at dawn, then streams and estates

    • About 50 km of local driving

Dawn at a rainforest fragment near town, where the canopy is busy with barbets, hornbills, white-bellied treepies and mixed flocks, and lion-tailed macaques often share the trees. We(family of 4) recently came back from a 4 days 3 night Valparai -Top Slip -Parambikulam Tour package organized by Mr.Mahesh. We enjoyed every bit of the tour. I have to admit that I was initially apprehensive about choosing a Tour package just by a Google search. However the positive feedback that I saw in the Google reviews gave me a lot of confidence and I went ahead with my instinct and iam glad I did that. Mr.Mahesh was quite professional in handling the communication about the tour and ensured that the pickup at our Railway Station was on time. He even helped with arranging tasty home cooked food in Valparai which made our trip quite memorable. Finally Mr.Mahesh is not just any other tour operator...he holds a Ph.D., in Wildlife conservation and Ecology and he is quite knowledgeable about the forests. One of the cherished experiences i had during this trip was an early morning bird watching trip in Valparai where Mr.Mahesh helped me spot different birds and wildlife of that region. It would not have been possible without the deep knowledge that Mr.Mahesh possesses about the Forest. I was amazed how he kept his eyes and ears open even while he was driving to spot animals and birds by their calls. I was thrilled when he helped me spot the elusive Great Indian Hornbill bird pair by closely listening and tracking their calls even from a considerable distance. I would recommend Mr.Mahesh to anyone who is looking for a trip to Valparai.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Can't find yours? Ask us on WhatsApp — a real person replies.

Is Valparai good for bird watching?

Yes. Rainforest fragments, tea estates, streams and nearby Topslip give a mix of Western Ghats endemics and forest birds within a short drive.

What is the best season for birding in Valparai?

November to April is the most comfortable, with many resident birds active and nesting from about February. Monsoon birding is possible, but wet.

Do you provide a birding guide?

Our naturalist-led team plans the routes and timings. If you need a specialist bird guide, tell us your target species when you enquire.

Do we need binoculars?

Yes, please carry your own, because many birds stay high in the canopy.
