Rain in Valparai: two monsoons

Valparai sits on the windward edge of the Anamalai Hills and is one of the wettest places in Tamil Nadu. Most of its rain falls during the southwest monsoon (June–August), often for days at a stretch, with Chinnakallar nearby among the rainiest spots in the state.

A second, lighter spell comes with the northeast monsoon in October and November, usually as afternoon or evening showers. January to March is the driest period. Read our monsoon travel guide if you plan to visit in the rains.

Mist, fog and visibility on the ghat

  • Mist is common on monsoon days and on winter mornings. It can hide the viewpoints for hours and then lift in minutes.
  • Fog on the 40 hairpin bends is the main reason we drive the ghat only in daylight and plan early starts.
  • For views, plan Nallamudi and Loam's View Point for the first clear window of the day rather than a fixed time.

What to wear by season

  • December–February: a light jacket or fleece for mornings and evenings; cotton by day.
  • March–May: cotton clothing, a cap and sunscreen; a light layer for the night.
  • June–September: a proper rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, leech socks and shoes with grip. Umbrellas struggle in the wind.
  • October–November: a compact umbrella or rain jacket for afternoon showers.
  • See the full packing checklist.

How the weather changes your sightseeing

  • Monkey Falls and some viewpoints close when the flow or wind is dangerous; the forest department decides daily.
  • The Athirappilly–Malakkappara forest road is open only in daylight and may close after heavy rain. See the route guide.
  • Waterfalls such as Chinnakallar are fullest from July to October and thin out by March.
  • Wildlife is easiest to see in the dry months, when animals stay near water and roadsides are open.

Checking today's weather

Mobile coverage is patchy on the plateau, so check the forecast before you set off. The India Meteorological Department issues district forecasts and heavy-rain alerts for Coimbatore district, which covers Valparai. On the trip, our drivers check road and waterfall status every morning and adjust the day.
