Quick answer

We don't rent bikes ourselves, but we plan Valparai bike trips. You ride your own bike or one rented in Coimbatore or Pollachi, and we book your stay, plan a daylight route (Aliyar, the 40 hairpin bends, Nallamudi, Sholayar and optionally Malakkappara) and can add a back-up cab for luggage or a pillion who prefers a car. Forest roads have daytime-only checkposts and strict no-stopping rules near wildlife.

Pollachi or Coimbatore (you ride)
Ends

Day-by-day itinerary

Customise this plan
  1. Aerial view of hairpin bends on a ghat roadDay 1

    Day 1

    Pollachi → Aliyar → 40 hairpin bends → Valparai

    • 64 km from Pollachi · 105 km from Coimbatore
    • Valparai
    • Dinner

Fill up completely in Pollachi, because fuel stations on the plateau are few; see petrol stations and ATMs. Ride to Aliyar Dam and start the climb: first gear on the tightest bends, keep left, and never overtake on a bend. Stop at Loam's View Point and the pull-outs near Attakatti. In the afternoon, ride to Koolangal river and Sri Balaji Temple, and park up before dusk.

  2. Sholayar Dam near ValparaiDay 2

    Day 2

    Nallamudi → Sholayar → (Malakkappara) → descent

    • About 60–80 km of local riding + descent
    • Drop
    • Breakfast

Ride to Nallamudi Poonjolai for the morning view, then take the Sholayar road to the dam's viewpoint, and on to Malakkappara if you like, riding the estate stretch in daylight. Return to Valparai for lunch and descend with plenty of daylight left: use engine braking on the way down and take a break halfway.

Renting a bike for Valparai

  • Where: self-drive bike and scooter rentals operate in Coimbatore; there are fewer in Pollachi and very few in Valparai town. We don't rent bikes ourselves.
  • What to check: registration and insurance papers with the bike, working brakes, tyres with good tread (the descent is long), and the rental's rules on hill and inter-state (Kerala) riding.
  • What you need: a valid driving licence for the vehicle class, ID, and helmets for both rider and pillion, which are mandatory.
  • Which bike: a 125–350 cc bike or a scooter with good brakes handles the ghat. Carry rain gear from June to November.

Road rules that matter here

  • Forest checkposts on the Malakkappara–Athirappilly road operate in daylight only and can close after heavy rain.
  • Do not stop near, honk at or approach elephants or gaur. Keep moving slowly and give them space.
  • No night riding on the ghat, where fog, wildlife and unlit bends make it dangerous.
  • Keep speeds low on estate roads, which workers, children and animals also use.

Good to know

  • Carry a small toolkit and a puncture kit.
  • Rain gear matters: from June to November, showers can be heavy and sudden.
  • Prefer four wheels? See the 2 days 1 night package.

Hii, It's been exactly a month from the trip , I am posting my reviews here. " The Fruit of a trip,is tasted by cherishment of its memories" Its that kind of the trip ,we went on Valparai last month. We planned out trip arrangements with VALPARAI MAHESH TRAVELS , based on there good reviews in website. But they never disappointed us at any situation. We went 3 day 2 night plan, to Pollachi, parambikulam, Valparai. They planned all the itenaries and kept us informed. Even though some unexpected delay on the day one of arrival, they managed the schedule and covered all the itenaries. The accommodation arrangements were smooth and well-executed.Its tidy ,safe and comfortable room. A Trip is more about ride ,from the start to end we are provided with a cab with smooth ride experience and the driver was well mannered and knew the route well. We planned this trip for our daughter's 2nd birthday, so we planned to cut cake at somewhere , but to "the cherry on the top", Magesh sir gave as a call and took us to an awesome scenic tea estate ,and arranged for a cake cutting celebration and made the moment time stand still. As per the quote I mentioned above, we are cherishing all this moment without any disappointment and inconvenience, was surely because of Magesh travel who ensured all arrangements were made with precision and care. Thank you Magesh travels for all your incredible support and efforts, it's something we will always cherish.

We truly appreciated the deep knowledge and details you shared with us about the forest and nature. Because of you, we felt like family throughout the journey, and my entire family enjoyed the experience immensely. I will strongly recommend Mahesh Travels to anyone without a second thought. It was a trip we will cherish for a lifetime. Thank you so much again for everything Brother. That goodbye felt like leaving a family member behind. It was truly a pleasure spending time together.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Can I rent a bike in Valparai?

Rentals in Valparai town are very limited. Most riders rent in Coimbatore (occasionally Pollachi) and ride up. We don't rent bikes, but we plan the stay and the route.

Is the Valparai ghat road safe on a bike?

Yes, for experienced riders in daylight and dry weather. The 40 hairpin bends are tight, so use low gears, keep left and never overtake on a bend.

Are bikes allowed on the Athirappilly–Malakkappara forest road?

The forest road has checkposts with daytime hours and its own rules, which can change. Check at the checkpost, ride only in daylight, and see the route guide.

Can you send a back-up cab?

Yes, on request, at our usual day rates. It is handy for luggage, rain, or a pillion who would rather sit in a car.
