Quick answer

From Ooty to Mudumalai there are two roads: the Kalhatti (Sigur) ghat via Masinagudi, about 36 km with 36 steep hairpin bends and vehicle restrictions at times, and the longer, gentler road via Pykara, Naduvattam and Gudalur, about 65–70 km. Most tourist cabs use whichever route is permitted and safest that day; allow 1.5–2.5 hours.

Kalhatti ghat

  • Very steep gradients and tight bends.
  • Authorities have imposed restrictions on direction, timings or vehicle types in some periods.
  • Use low gears; overheating brakes are a real risk.

Gudalur road

  • Longer but easier; passes Pykara and the Needle Rock viewpoint area.
  • Good choice for large vehicles and nervous passengers.
