The story
In the late 1800s, planters began clearing parts of the Anamalai plateau for coffee and later tea. Carver Marsh is remembered as a pioneer of this change. Today's Valparai — estate lines, factories and silver-oak shaded slopes — grew out of that era, while forest fragments survived in ravines and along rivers.
